He was born the youngest of 6 children in Montmartre, Saskatchewan on November 27, 1963. He grew up in both Odessa and later Indian Head where he graduated from high school. He spent the first years of his adult life in Indian Head, but thanks to his brother teaching school in Wolseley he met Heather Duthie there while visiting his brother and they would spend the next 40 years together. He married Heather in 1990 and moved to Ethelbert, Manitoba where he worked as a grain buyer for Cargill. He loved the area thanks to many opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors fishing and camping almost right out of his back door. He also made many lifelong friends there as well. In 1995 he was transferred to Dauphin, Manitoba and stayed there until 1996 when he decided to leave Cargill and return home to Indian Head. It was in the fall of that year that we welcomed Carly into our family and life began back home again in Indian Head with his second child Zach arriving in 1999. This began Dave's love affair with being a father and helping, coaching and organizing anything that was needed in their lives.
In between this he enjoyed 15 years of employment at Indian Head High School as a caretaker where his duties far exceeded just cleaning up, including coaching, cheering and mentoring many kids over the years, including his own two. In the last few years he had transferred his passion to the Indian Head cemetery and rink. Passion is an accurate word for any endeavor Dave took on - he was always all in and expected everyone else to be on board too, be it sports, working casual at the nursing home, family or the town of Indian Head.
Dave was predeceased by both of his parents Norma and Harold.
He is survived by his wife Heather; children Zach and Carly McCarthy and son-in-law Rhett. He is also survived by 5 siblings: Murray (Audrey), Dale (Rose), Laurie, Lyle and Ray (Jen); brother-in-law Clayton; mother-in-law Ferne, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held in the Indian Head Memorial Hall, Indian Head, Saskatchewan on Saturday, March 15, 2025 at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Don Jewit. The interment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memoriam may be made to the Indian Head Broncs Football Team, cheques made payable to Broncs Parents Association, P.O. Box 444, Indian Head, Saskatchewan or by electronic funds transfer to [email protected]
