Douglas, beloved husband of 66 years to Delores (Houk); father to Lori (Kelly) and Kent (Peggy); grandfather to: Erin (Whitfield) Kendra (Kevin), Ashley (Xavier), Stephanie (Landon) and Kale (Shae-Lynn); great-grandfather to: Ava, Atlan, Grayson, Vaughn, Soren, Ziya and Millania; brothers- in-law Myles (Bev) Houk and Owen (Joanne) Telfer and sister-in-law Evelyn Houk.
He was predeceased by his parents Charlie & Ruby Appleton; sister Vivian; stepmother Gladys; brother-in-law Lorne and in-laws Rudy and Minnie Houk.
Douglas moved to Indian Head from Whitewood in 1941 to the family farm north of Indian Head and actively farmed for 70 plus years. The farm Willow Creek Farms is still owned and operated by Kent, Peggy and Kale.
He played hockey for 45 years, from juvenile to senior to old timers and enjoyed not only the sport but the social part that always came after: beer, music and laughter. He also enjoyed playing ball when we had sports days out at Robinson Field.
When they moved off the farm to the house on Dewdney and Houghton, they still had a garden, darn near the same size as they had on the farm because dad said: “nothing like your own grown vegetables”. The farm always had his heart, never really adapting to town life. Some of his favourite things to do were taking the side by side and driving around checking fields and visiting neighbors. When he left the farm, his hobby was to collect toy replicas of all the equipment that he had used through the years. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a great source of pride for him.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the exceptional care dad received at Indian Head Hospital and Regina General Hospital. Also to extend their sincere thanks to friends and family for the outpouring of love and support during this most difficult time.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, May 2, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. in the Memorial Hall in Indian Head, Saskatchewan, officiated by Don Jewitt. A private interment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations can be made to the Indian Head & District Hospital Foundation Inc., Box 1547, Indian Head, SK S0G 2K0 or e-transfer to email: [email protected]
