Alfred was born in Memphis, Tennessee to George and Grace (Rawlings) Mitchell. His family later migrated to Chicago, Illinois when Alfred was a young boy. He attended elementary school and graduated from high school in the Chicago public school system. He met and married his childhood sweetheart, Katherine Singleton on May 18, 1969. To this union one child was born, Lawrence Mitchell. He later married his current wife, Michele on June 17, 2020 and gained a stepdaughter, DeShawn Hale and a stepson, Gregory Hale II.
Alfred professed his faith in Christ at an early age and was baptized. He proudly retired from Indianapolis Power & Light in July of 2001after 25 years of service in their Steam Heat division.
Alfred’s Chicago family and friends knew his mostly as “Chuck”. His Indiana family and friends mostly knew him as “Al” or “Mitch”. By his son, he was called “My Daddy”, by his wife he was called “Alfred”, by his grandchildren he was called “PawPaw”. By whatever name he was called, the constant among them was that he was known to be a truly good man with a big heart. He was known to be an honest man; don’t ask his advice or opinion if you didn’t want to know the truth. He was a fiercely loyal friend who knew the meaning of the word. He was a straightforward man who did what he said he was going to do and naturally looked out for and helped others if he could. He was a thoughtful man, remembering to send birthday greetings to his family and buying small thoughtful tokens he knew they liked, to surprise them. He was generous with himself with what he had to offer to others. He was also known not to take stuff off anyone.
Alfred loved life. He enjoyed socializing, playing cards, cookouts, family gatherings, traveling to see family, all holidays and his birthday, which he thought was a national holiday. He enjoyed a house full of people where he could feed and make sure they had what they needed. He took note of the little things people liked who came to his home and made sure it was there in the event they should visit.
Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, George and Grace Mitchell; two brothers, Robert Lewis and Walter Mitchell; a sister, Barbara Ann Gill; and his mother and father in law, Adolph and Virginia Buckner.
