Ann was a native of Indianapolis where she attended Orchard School and Tudor Hall before two years at Skidmore College. On February 22, 1941, while attending a Bundles for Britain dance, she renewed on acquaintance from Army Force; and shortly after Ann and Noble were married in Selma, Alabama. When Noble returned from combat as a Spitfire pilot in North Africa, Ann and he ended the war on various air bases where Noble settled to family life. Ann was active in support of her beloved Orchard School throughout her life, in particularly enjoying meeting with students to discuss the heritage of the school and what it had been like in her day. She had a great joy of life, treasuring her family, delighting in camping trips in Indiana and across the country where she would read Dickens aloud around the campfire. Always available if anyone needed a haircut, Ann created ties with younger generations. She reached out to phone operators and fellow airline passengers, discovering their homes and relationships. She was a friend to all, full of stories and advice. As one of her daughter’s friends said, you could feel the energy emanating from her. Throughout her life Ann was involved with The Dramatic Club, The Junior League, The Christamore Guild and The Indianapolis Garden Club.
Ann was preceded in death by her husband and sister. She is survived by her son, Thomas (Karen), and daughter Margaret, as well as her grandchildren Noble, Ben and Kate, and her great-granddaughter Anna.
Memorials may be given to the Thornswift Nature Preserve (Harbor Springs, Michigan) the Ann Dean Alumni Scholarship at The Orchard School, The Orchard School Foundation, or the Hooverwood Foundation. The family extends sincere thanks to the staff of Hooverwood nursing home who have cared for Ann. Thanks also goes to Transitions hospice care who with Hooverwood during this time of coronavirus, saw that no one is alone.
