

Passed away January 28, 2018. She was the only child of Henry C. and Lola N. Churchman and was born January 18, 1929. She was an active Girl Scout and was the last formal Cookie Queen in Indiana to wear the long velvet robe and be on the radio. She went on to be a leader for both her daughter and granddaughter. She graduated from Shortridge High school, attended Indiana University, and graduated from Butler University as only one of two women in the School of Business. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta and Gamma Alpha Xi. After graduation she worked downtown at L. S. Ayers & Co. and H. P. Wasson & Co. writing advertising copy. After her marriage to Edward J. Doherty Jr. she became involved with her children's sports and school activities. For six years she worked in the Athletic Department at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church and was awarded the Dawson Award for her hard work. She was also manager of the General Nutrition Center in Glendale and then went to work for Hillsdale Nursery for 25 years. Barbara used her talents at the First Church of Christ, Scientist where she was Reader. For ten years Barbara was a teacher's aid at Wanamaker Elementary School. Before that she had taught swimming, dancing and knitting and loved working in her garden, needlework, decorating, but mostly sitting in the screened front porch. She was an active member of the Beech Grove Historical Society. Her survivors include her daughter Elizabeth Ann Earlywine, son Henry James (Melinda) Doherty, grandchildren James Lee and David Michael (Ashley) Earlywine and Amanda Joann Doherty, and great grandchildren Emalie Nadine Earlywine, Kaden Andrew Monka and Adaleigh Kay Compton. No flowers please, instead contributions to her church or Beech Grove Historical Society would be greatly appreciated. Graveside services will be held at 11am Feb 2, 2018 in Crown Hill Cemetery.
