Born in Covington, KY, in 1943, Bebe was raised in Louisville, KY and was proud to tell everyone…” I’m from Sheppard Square Projects in Smoketown, KY”. She graduated from Male High School in Louisville while being voted “Best Dancer” of her class. After high school, she worked for Booker T. Washington school, and G.C. Williams funeral home, while pursing hobbies in skating with friends, and socializing at Joe’s Palm Room.
Years later, Bebe would marry Lawrence F. Courtney Sr., and relocate to Indianapolis, IN embarking on a journey of love and commitment that inspired many throughout their marriage. Bebe worked for Washington Township Schools, Project I-Star, and made her final landing and retirement at INHP. She also excelled as an entrepreneur for Mary Kay in her early years, while finding her “true” passion as a gospel singer for “The Singing Sisters” directed by her husband, until the groups retirement in 2024 after 35 years.
Throughout her life, Bebe also demonstrated what it meant to have a servant’s heart. As a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church for more than 30 years, Bebe joined her husband in their dedication to supporting others through the church’s marriage ministry. She also was a member of the Senior Choir ministry, Women’s ministry, Vacation Bible School ministry and faithfully volunteered wherever she was needed.
Family was important to her, and she went out of her way to make her signature peach cobbler for all; no matter what the gathering. An avid “Bid Whist” player, she would stay up all night playing cards with other couples, with her kids in tow.
Bebe was preceded in death by her husband of 40 plus years, Lawrence F. Courtney Sr., father, John Berry; mother, Bebe Berry; sister, Juanita Singleton; her niece, Marilyn Corbitt; great-nephew, Corey Corbitt; and bonus children Melonee Scott, Jeffersonville, IN, and LaToyia Courtney, Louisville, KY. She was a loving mom to her surviving children, Michelle D. Moorman and Lawrence F. Courtney Jr., and bonus mom to Anissia Lynne Courtney, Jeffersonville, IN.
8 Grandkids; Vantwon Jones Sr, Lawrence F. Courtney III., Ava Courtney, Aliccia Courtney, Lauren Henderson, Roderick Courtney, Timmesha Courtney, and Derron Scales.
Bebe will be deeply missed by her loving and devoted children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many sisters/brothers-in-laws, and extended family and friends.
A visitation for Bebe will be held Saturday, April 20, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 1301 N Goodlet Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46222, followed by a celebration of life at 12:00 PM.
