
Byron Keith Mason was called to the embracing arms of his Lord and Savior on December 9, 2015. He is a native of Indianapolis, Indiana. Byron attended grade schools #43 & #84. He graduated from Broad Ripple High School where he served as the first African-American president of both his junior and senior class. Byron also starred on the Rockets 1973 & 74 basketball teams. Byron went on to attend Indiana University to study political science and French. He graduated with honors in 1978. Byron attended law school at the University of Iowa from 1978 to 1981. He began his practice in Chicago at Winston & Strawn law firm after graduating and passing the bar exam in 1982. In 1987, Byron returned to Indianapolis where he practiced law with Baker & Daniels law firm specializing in litigation and product liability. He was the first African-American lawyer to be named partner at Baker & Daniels. In 2013 Byron joined Taft, Steittinius, & Hollister, LLC law firm. Byron served on the boards of several community organizations including US Rowing Association, Indianapolis Boys & Girls Clubs, the Indianapolis Humane Society, Goodwill Industries, United Way of Central Indiana, and Special Olympics. Byron was a compassionate animal lover. He was known to take in stray animals. Byron is survived by his mother, Evelyn Mason; brother, Daryl Mason; niece, Jama Mason; grand nephews, Jordan Talley, Ryland Talley, Chandler Elmore, and Zion Allen. Byron also has loving relatives in Houston and Cold Springs, Texas. Byron was proceeded in death by his father Joe N. Mason and his beloved dogs, Duffy, Chase, Madison, Keno, and Hawkeye, whom he cherished very much.
