Oh what a joyous occasion it was when Dorothy Marie Allen (“Dottie”) gave her first breath of life on January 28, 1961! Her parents, Henry Walter George & Lillie Mae George, were in admiration and awe when they were able to hear the weeping sounds of their baby’s first cries as well as embrace her sensitive touch. Born in General Hospital, what many of us know as, “Wishard” Hospital, she has left a profound legacy on many lives throughout her years in this City of Indianapolis.
On October 12, 1996, Dottie married her best friend, Michael C. Allen, Sr. which made her life complete. A devoted wife, mother, sister, daughter, and friend, Dottie unquestionably dedicated her life and her world to those around her. She would always offer advice to others even if you didn’t want to hear it. She had a “tell it like it is” attitude and would never hold her tongue.
Dottie was a genuine example of a hard-worker, go-getter, and a self-motivator. Although she was the youngest of eleven children, many of her siblings sought her out for guidance and advice, because of her spiritual gift of wisdom. A proud sister and mother, she was truly loved, respected, and valued. She was a giving person. She gave her heart to many and poured so much love and affection into everyone she encountered.
Dottie was a product of the Indianapolis Public Schools where she graduated from Arlington High School in 1981. After high school she spent the majority of her years serving and working in the MSD of Wayne Township Schools where she recently retired. She held a variety of positions while working in Wayne; however, the last position she served as the Warehouse Manager where she was responsible for the proper coding, delivery, distribution, and overall book inventory of the entire school district. She devoted so much time to the MSD of Wayne Township and served there in the same manner as she served her family. (Tirelessly)
Dottie professed Jesus as her Lord and Savior at an early age; however, the past few years, she has made it evident to seek out a more intimate and deeper relationship with Christ. A true believer of her faith and her service to God’s Kingdom, she earned Phase II of the COPP program that recognized her increased biblical knowledge; her added understanding of the Baptist Doctrine and strengthened her leadership skills in which permitted various leadership roles in the body of Christ. She served in various capacities at her church; including, the Union District’s Women’s Auxiliary and President of the Missionary at Hope MBC, to name a few. She was a representation of a true servant and sowed into the lives of others. She truly was a loving and caring person, devoted house-wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, “to know her, was to love her!”
It saddens us all to know that on October 4, 2015 at 2:26 p.m., God called her home to be with Him. But it is assuring to know that to be absent in the body is to be present with Christ (Corinthians 5). Dottie leaves to cherish in her loving memory her children: Latasha (Lamonte) George Edmonson-Harlin, Henry (Travis) Canady (Tinika Harrison), Tahia Canady, Diamond Smith, Tovia Allen, Damon Wells, Michael Allen, Jr., &Tyia Allen. Her beloved mother, Lillie Mae George and her brothers and sisters, Curtis Woodfork, JoAnn Sykes & deceased husband R.D. Sykes, Walter George, Shirley Turentine, Henry Michael George, Teresa (Henry) Williams, Tyrone (Cindy) George, Destiny (Monique) George. Those that preceded her are her cherished father, Henry Walter George and her departed brothers and sisters Hannah Jean George, Barbara Ann Porter, Nettie Mae Doumbouya, Linda Jean Robinson & husband Tim Robinson. Dottie also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and more whom she loved from the bottom of her heart.
Her visitation will take place on Friday, October 9, 2015, 9am - 11am, with the Homegoing Celebration commencing at 11am at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. Her burial will take place in New Crown Cemetery.
