Eddie Cox Sr was born as an only child in 1933, in Bowden, GA to Gladys. When he was around 10 years old, his mother was married to Bennie Cox, they then moved from Bowden, GA to Indianapolis, IN. Eddie Cox Sr. attended Indianapolis Public Schools.
In 1951, with much bravery, Eddie joined the Army and fought in the Korean War. He was very young at the time of enlistment. Shortly after, he would marry the love of his life Rita M. Cox. Eddie and Rita shared a life together, having a set of twins, a son, and 2 bonus daughters. The two were married for 46 years until her passing in 2003.
Eddie Cox was a dad. He was present, making sure he was an active parent in the household. He was firm, meaning every word that he said, over and above that, a provider, ensuring each day there was food on the table. He was confident, masculine, and strong. Although he wasn’t perfect, He was those things in fact.
After being employed for 36 years, Eddie Cox retired from the Finance Center which is now Defense Finance Accounting Service (DFAS), and continued to wear many hats. He delivered for several years part-time, operating the school bus for Indianapolis Public Schools. With spiritual guidance from the lord, Eddie was committed to driving the church bus to his church home, Zion Tabernacle Apostolic Church. In addition, he faithfully served as a deacon and building superintendent for this said church.
Eddie enjoyed spending time with his family, reading and listening to the word, and being outdoors enjoying the sunlight. He also delighted in leading the prayer for the Chapel Service every Sunday at Nora Commons.
Eddie Cox gave his life to the Lord upwards of over 40 years ago. He mentioned that it is not about what we say, but “What did GOD say?” He reminded his children, and grandchildren quite often to “honor their mother and father”, and encouraged his family to always seek the Lord. His spiritual guidance has impacted his entire family, shaping them into strong believers.
Eddie Cox’s health began to significantly decline around April 2023. He was cared for by his children and his caregiver, allowing each one of them to experience a special intimacy with him during his last and final days. As he barely could speak, he found the words to still call out the name…Jesus. Even at times of discomfort, he still had enough strength, faith, and tenacity to call the name, Jesus. He was called home on May 17th, 2023 at the age of 89 years young.
Eddie Cox was preceded in death by his mother (Gladys), father, wife (Rita Cox), stepfather (Bennie Cox), bonus daughter (Diane Marshall) Grandson (Andre Cox), and Granddaughter (Jennifer Osborn). He leaves to cherish his children, Debbie Golden, Eddie Cox Jr, Anthony (Janice) Cox, and Katherine Starkey. 6 living grandchildren; Eddie Cox III, Adam Cox, Erwin Golden, Rachel Golden, Monica Osborn, and Robert Marshall, 15 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
