

He grew up and went to school in Alton, Illinois while helping on his family’s truck farm. As he got older, Ernie (as he was called by his family) moved to Kentucky with his sister Chris and her husband Bratton, where he stayed until the Army call him to service. Ed was drafted on August 7th, 1953, and went to Cook and Bakers school and worked as a mess sergeant until honorably discharged on June 14th 1955. It was then that He settled in Indianapolis and while working at a Meat packing plant (Stark and Wetzel’s), he got married to his first wife, Barbara Ruth Abney, on May 19th, 1956. Ed and Barbara had four children, Constance Ann, Edward E. Jr., Mark Wayne and Brian Allen. Ed and Barbara divorced in 1967. Edward continued to serve his country by continuous service in the Army Reserve from the time he was discharged from active-duty until the time he retired as a Command Sergeant Major in December of 1991. During which He volunteered for a six-month stint of active-duty service in Saudi Arabia during the first Desert Storm action that liberated Kuwait from Saddam Hussein’s regime.
In August 31st, 1985, Edward married his second wife, Betty Hogue. Betty was the mother of three children Beverly, William and B.J. Ed and Betty parted ways on January 19th, 1996.
After nearly twenty years of working at Starks and working for nearly every grocery store chain in Indianapolis at one time or another Ed, settled in at the Commissary Meat Department at Fort Benjamin Harrison. He worked his way up to the Position of Meat Manager prior to retiring from there at the age of 73.
Edward was preceded in death by all of his brothers and sisters, fifteen total. His first wife Barbara Ruth Stevens and his daughter Constance Ann Lewellen. He also was preceded by his second wife Betty Stevens, her son William Hogue, and B.J.’s husband, Jim Mitchell.
Edward is survived by Edward Jr. (Charisse), Mark Wayne, and Brian Allen, as well as Beverly Dowling, her husband Randy and B.J. Mitchell. Edward was blessed with 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Visitation starts at 10:00 AM at the Crown Hill Funeral Home with the graveside service starting at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, October 6th 2021.
Memorials may be given to Paralyzed Veterans of America, Salvation Army and St. Jude’s Children’s research hospital.
