Eugene L. Engel

Born on August 16, 1937, in Valparaiso, Indiana to Marian and Lewis Engel. Eugene pursued his education at Purdue University, where he graduated with a degree in Industrial Economics. From humble beginnings as an assistant store manager at Haag Drugstore in Indianapolis, he advanced his career in business retiring as the president of a national office products cooperative. His dedication to his career was matched only by his devotion to his family.

Gene’s career took him all over the country. While advancing his career he found time to participate in many family activities. He was president of the Little League (hitting out the opening day first pitch dressed as Winnie the Pooh) and served as a Scoutmaster. He loved fishing and finally settled in Mississippi where he lived on a lake where he could enjoy his own fishing boat every day. After retirement he returned to New Jersey to be near family.

Eugene was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He shared a deep and enduring bond with his wife, Valorie Engel, who preceded him in death. Their children and grandchildren were their greatest joy. Together, they built a loving family that includes their six children: Linda Engel, Heidi Druhot, Brian Engel, Michael Engel, Lisa Heyman, and Donald Engel. Eugene took great pride in his grandchildren: Zachary Druhot, Emma Druhot, Lauren Engel, Benjamin Engel, Jack Engel, Patrick Heyman, Christopher Heyman, Arwen Engel, Aeris Engel, Orion Engel, Archer Engel, John Engel, James Engel, Jack Engel, and Joseph Engel. He is also survived by his brother Vernon Engel and nephews Phillip Engel and Kevin Engel.

A visitation for Eugene will be held Saturday, March 1, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, Indiana 46208, followed by a Celebration of Life at 12:00 PM.

Eugene’s memory will live on in the hearts of his family and all those who knew him.
