Gene passed away in his sleep early Saturday morning. Gene was born to Eugene and Joean Maloy on December 25, 1951. Gene attended St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary school and graduated from Cathedral High School. Gene served in the US Navy.
Gene married the love of his life, Terri (Creech) Maloy, 48 years ago. He loved her deeply and as best as he could throughout their marriage. Their marriage survived tremendous loss and great joy. Gene was cared for by Terri throughout his many health struggles over the last 11 years and he wrote her love notes up until the end.
Gene and Terri had three children, Shaun Marie, Joseph, and Nicholas. Gene and Terri made many sacrifices and showed great love to their children. Sadly, Gene and Terri lost Joseph and Nicholas tragically. Nick was killed by a drunk driver in 1993 at the age of 12. Following that, Gene endured the remaining days of his life with a broken heart. At the time of Nick’s death, Gene and Terri made the generous decision that Nick’s organs would be donated. Those donations resulted in four lives being saved. In an effort to ensure that others would not experience such senseless loss, Gene devoted significant amounts of his time and resources to Mothers Against Drunk Driving. He also participated in Indiana’s Victim Impact Panels where he told Nick’s story and the story of our family in hopes that it would encourage others to make the decision NOT to drink and drive.
Later in life, Gene was a loving grandfather. He spent many hours coloring with his young granddaughters. They could always make him smile.
Gene is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Terri Maloy; his daughter, Shaun Marie Irwin; son in law, Michael Irwin; granddaughters, Allison, Kaitlyn, and Hailey Jo Irwin; granddaughters Ava Diaz and Olivia Goff. Gene was loved and is survived by his sister’s, Timmee Keys, Joean Mysliwiec, and Kelly Maloy and his brother Patrick Maloy; brother-in-law, Jos Van Hout; sisters’ in law, Vicki Alford, Joanne Rhodes, Kathy Creech, Liz Coram, Mary Ann Maloy and Amy Maloy. Gene is survived by many loving nieces and nephews who brought laughter to his life and whom he loved very much.
