George Edward Schaub

George Edward Schaub 91, died February 1, 2019. He was born August 9, 1927 in Indianapolis to George and Rose Schaub. He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947. He retired from Link Belt Chain Division in 1988 and worked for EM Company from 1989 to 2017 and was a member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Louise Fay Schaub, brother Joseph H. Schaub, sisters Rita Blackburn and Ann Marie Schaub. George is survived by his loving nieces Mary Lou Sherman and Rose (Preston) Droddy, Barbara (Tom) Huston, Greg (Peggy) Schaub, brother Charles A. Schaub and several great nieces and nephews. George played the alto and tenor saxophone in his Cathedral High School Band, The U.S. Army Band. He played with the YMCA House Band Downtown every Saturday night. In 1957 he joined Herman Koers with the Headliner’s Band and continued to play with them until 2017. During his many years of playing the saxophone he would sub for the Northwinds, Bill Overman Quintet, Ambassadors, Glenn Miller Band and many other area bands when needed. He met the “Love of his Life” Louise Fay when he played at the YMCA where he joined her dance class. They taught dance lessons throughout the years. They were married 47 years. Together they raised two nieces, Rose (Fay) Droddy and Mary Lou (Fay) Sherman. In February of 1989 after George’s retirement from Link Belt / FMC, and much prodding from his Brother Joe and his Nephew Greg, he joined EM Company in Southport Indiana. (Electrical and Mechanical Contractors) For over 28 years George was able to work with 10 members of His family on a daily basis. For 27 of those years he worked with his older brother Joe (St. Joe). George and Joe were soon to be known as “The Brothers”. They picked parts at every Electrical, HVAC and Refrigeration supply house in Indianapolis. George was the worker and Joe was the talker. They had quite a reputation and were immensely enjoyed by all who came in contact with them. George worked diligently helping to manage EM Company’s fleet, tools, all materials to and from the jobs as well as maintaining and keeping the shop organized. George always made time to talk with you and ask you how things were going. At the end of the day he never left the shop without making “his rounds” to say goodbye to everyone. George was a joy to be around and will be deeply missed by his EM Company Work Family. Music has been a big part of George’s life. In his later years he continued to play with his nephew Greg Schaub and Herman Koers for “Breakfast with Santa”. While at Rosegate Senior Living he would play his saxophone with Greg every Wednesday night. Dementia did not take away his love for playing his saxophone. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church on Thursday February 7 at Noon with visitation starting at 10 am. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. George’s special bond with his niece “Rose” allowed him to live his later years with dignity and special care, Rose’s giving nature gave him a reason to smile every day!
