

Jack Chandler McElhiney, age 95 Jack Chandler McElhiney was born July 6 1920 in Akron, Ohio. He was the son of James Shelton McElhiney and Dura Nell Hunt. He attended Akron South High School, and graduated in the class of 1938. He played American Legion baseball, and he had a basketball scholarship to Bankus Business College which he attended. In January, 1943, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps to become a pilot. Shortly after enlisting, President Roosevelt signed an order that all enlistees were to be assigned to the infantry for overseas assignments. He was then a member of the 97th Infantry Division, 386th Infantry Regiment, E Company, 2nd Battalion unit. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 2 bronze service stars Attachment (double), WWII Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Clasp and with Japan Clasp, Expert Badge and Rifle Bar, Combat Infantryman Badge 2nd award, River Driver and Mechanic Badge. He returned to Akron, Ohio after the war and attended the University of Akron and graduated with the class of 1952. He eventually settled there working for the rubber industry. Prior to the war, he had worked for B.F. Goodrich Company, and after the war he worked for Goodyear Tire & Rubber. He was retired from McElhiney & CO, Inc. Prior to moving to Summer Trace retirement community, he lived on Twin Lakes Golf Course and he was a member there. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine, his five brothers and sisters, and adopted son Larry McElhiney. He is survived by his second wife Elizabeth; and daughter Barbara McElhiney, D.D.S. of Indianapolis; his son Jack (Mary Pat) of Indianapolis; his granddaughter, Meaghan McElhiney Neman (Paul) and great grandson, Jack Robert; his grandson Matthew C. McElhiney, Esq. of Tempe. AZ; and grandsons David, Danny , and Jeffrey (Liz), all of Illinois.
