

James W. Hampton, age 75, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on May 31, 2025. Born on September 5, 1949, in Jackson, Tennessee to Mae Lizzie Gill and Jessie James Hampton. He graduated from East High School with top honors. James moved at an early age to Gary, Indiana, where he would later meet the love of his life, Stephanie. The two shared 51 years of marriage filled with unwavering love, family, and devotion.
He was a loyal employee of 29 years of service to AAA Motor Club, where he was known for his dependability, kindness, and work ethic. In his free time, James enjoyed spending quality time with his son, playing pool, barbecuing, relaxing with word searches, and being surrounded by family.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jessie James Hampton, and siblings Bonita, Bobby, Jessie, and Ann.
James Hampton was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose love for his family was the foundation of his life. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Stephanie Hampton, and their children: Karen Hampton (Charles), James R. Hampton (Jennifer), and Roxanne. He was a proud grandfather to Stephanie, Tianna (Greg), Randall, Dezmon, and Jillian, and a joyful great-grandfather to Zayaan and Dakota - his pride and joy. His love and guidance will continue to live on in each of them.
James is also survived by his beloved mother, Mae Lizzie Gill, and his siblings; Bruce (Debbie), Christopher, Claudette, Kelly (Roy), Toshia, Cassandra, Vickie, Miranda (Patrick), Kimberly and Timothy.
Affectionately called "Big Hamp", or "Pops", by many held a special place in his heart for his daughters, Latisa Pickett, Felicia Avance, and Kimberly Harris, as well as his sons Joseph Barefield, Darrin Williams, Ramon (Leslie) Cooper, Vance Grady, David Allen, and Dwayne (Racquel) Thomas.
James was deeply connected to his extended community, including special friends Rebecca (Dwayne) Lawson, Pamela Carter, Brian (Carrie) Wilcox, and Calvin (Angie) Tynes, and a host of nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends whom he loved dearly.
James W. Hampton's life was a testament to love, loyalty, and laughter. His legacy will live on in the many lives he touched. He will be missed and forever remembered.
A visitation for James will be held Monday, June 9, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, Indiana 46208, followed by a Celebration of Life at 1:00 PM.
