Janice Kathryn Land, 74, of Indianapolis passed away peacefully in her home under the care of her family and St. Vincent’s Hospice after a 28-month struggle with cancer. Janice will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, fun sense of humor, and positive attitude.
Janice was born in Greensburg, IN on May 24, 1938 to parents Hubert and Kathryn (Hellmich) Wickens. She was a 1956 graduate of Greensburg High School and a 1959 graduate of St. Vincent School of Nursing. Janice and John F. Land, Jr. married on May 12, 1962. Janice always said her goal in life was to be a good mother. David was born in 1969 and Karen in 1971; both feel blessed to have had such a gracious, devoted, and loving Mom. Janice’s grandchildren, siblings, extended family and friends were all very special to her. She was very proud of those she loved.
Janice was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and had previously been a member of St. Pius X. Fr. Joseph Rautenberg (John’s cousin) has been a special spiritual friend to the entire family. Family friend, Maureen Sullivan, was there during both the good and hard times.
Janice appreciated everything - big and small. Flowers, birds, the dogs, wild animals, good neighbors, a game of Scrabble, a nice drive, a trip to Greensburg, a small vanilla DQ cone were just a few of the many joys in her life. She enjoyed taking train adventures with her husband to visit their son in Colorado and daughter in Montana. Janice also treasured her trips to Alaska (with Aunt Dot) to watch and cheer on her daughter as she raced her dog team in three Iditarod Sled Dog Races.
Janice is survived by her daughter Karen; son David Land-Closson and wife Linda; grandsons Ivan and Anthony Land-Closson; sister-in-law Dorothy Land; brother Don Wickens (Sharon); sister Roberta McGinnis (Bob); brother W. Michael Wilke (Judy); sister Adele Corya (John); sister Sally Wickens. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband of 50 years.
