John was born in Russell Springs, Kentucky to Olen Edward & Agnes (Grider) Shaw on May 9th, 1947. He attended Arsenal Tech High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. He worked for Allison Transmission/General Motors as a machinist for over 30 years. A proud Vietnam veteran, John served his country with courage and honor in the U.S Army. Though he rarely spoke of those years in full, his strength, resilience, and perspective were evident in the way he lived the rest of his life.
He was known for his generous spirit and his love of good food and company. Whether it was sharing a meal, raising a bottle, or simply sitting and talking, John had a way of making everyone feel welcome. He believed life was meant to be enjoyed—and enjoyed together. Family and friends will remember him for his easy grin, his sharing of food , and his ability to bring people together. His presence filled a room, and his absence will be deeply felt.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis Hammons Shaw, his son Jonathan Wayne Shaw, his two grandchildren Lillian Talia Shaw and Jonathan William Shaw, and his five sisters Anna, Barbara, Karen, Debbie, and Bonnie, who will carry forward his memory, his values, and his love of life.
Visitation will be held at Crown Hill Funeral Home, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, IN, on April 26, 2026, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, followed by the Funeral Service at 2:00 pm.
