

Larry Maurice O'Banion, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2024, at the age of 91. His life was a testament to dedication, service, and the enduring power of community.
Born on February 25, 1933, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Jesse Proctor and Milton O'Banion, Larry's journey was one of perseverance and achievement. He began his education at Indianapolis Public School #4 and went on to attend the historic Crispus Attucks High School. His thirst for knowledge led him to Tuskegee Institute, where he further honed his skills and understanding of the world.
Answering the call to serve his country, Larry enlisted in the United States Army and honorably served during the Korean War Conflict. Upon his return, he embarked on a 27-year career as a driver for George F. Hilgameier Brewing Company, distributor of Miller Beer. Later, he found his calling as an Indianapolis Metro bus driver, a position from which he eventually retired, having touched countless lives during his daily routes.
Larry's passions extended far beyond his professional life. For over six decades, he was an avid bridge player, accumulating numerous trophies and awards that spoke to his strategic mind and competitive spirit. His love for fishing provided him with countless hours of joy and camaraderie with his buddies.
Basketball held a special place in Larry's heart. He maintained lifelong friendships with his former Attucks teammates and competitors from around the country. More than just a player and fan, Larry was a mentor and inspiration to young athletes, always ready to offer encouragement and wisdom to the next generation of players.
Larry's legacy is one of love, laughter, and unwavering support. He is survived by his devoted wife, Crystal O'Banion and his beloved children: Kevin (Kellie) O'Banion, Christopher O'Banion, and Lisa O'Banion. His memory will live on through his grandchildren: Christopher, Andria, Sidney, Caylin, Jordan, and David, as well as his many great-grandchildren, who were blessed to have known his warmth and wisdom.
Larry was preceded in death by his son, Larry Thompson; grandson, Darius O'Banion, and sister, Mildred Fleming. Their memories remained close to his heart throughout his life.
