She loved her children, she loved her grandchildren (even more it seemed), and she loved her nieces and nephews. She was always smiling and sharing her stories.
She would tell me she wanted to talk to Randall, her son and my brother. However, I suspected she loved him so much because he was Brittany’s dad. I worked hard to explain that I was her favorite, but I couldn’t do anything if she got upset but call Randall and let her hear his voice. Her sons, Randall and Bo seemed to have a special way to make her smile. They just wanted to hear her voice and say, “Momma, how do you feel?” and “I love you!”
But, oh my, was she ever proud of Brittany! Sometimes I said, “I thought she had Alzheimer’s. How is it that she never forgets Brittany?”
“She’s so smart,” Momma would always say. “And she’s going to be a nurse!”
Jacob was held in very high esteem by his grandma as well! She enjoyed a certain peaceful atmosphere, it seems, when he was there. She always smiled hugely and said, “Oh hi!!!!!” Of course we would laugh. Every single time!
Our mother raised wonderful children. We love each other so much.
Throughout her years of suffering with this condition, her children and their families all worked together: Henry, Randall, Tonya (now deceased), Arthur Hull, Yolanda, Greg, and Jacob. A sign of an excellent mother!
Her niece Sharyn. I guess maybe she was top of another list for Momma. She always wanted to speak to Sharyn. Having Mom actually want to speak to you was special because watching the Hallmark Channel was quite important during her day. And certainly we didn’t want to interrupt that unless it was Sharyn. Sharyn, Joycelynn, and Frankie have cared dearly for their aunt Marilyn.
She loved her new AME Church family. Newman placed her in high regard!! After all, she was the mother of their pastor. But they loved her because of who she was. Her smile, her wave, and even her singing voice! Thank you, Newman. Thank you all for making her special and keeping her happy.
Her larger family, who were unable to be in touch frequently for various reasons over the last four years, loved her and cared for her as well. This includes her sister, Iretha, Percy, Cheryl, McClinton, David, Eden, Brohney, Brittany, Atlantis, Aria, Randall Jr., Andre’, and a host of special friends like Elvia Smith, whom we always have loved.
Special thank you to our mom's doctor, Dr Katherine Salisbury at the University of Michigan and her caregiver, Ayanna Anderson.
She was godly proud of her Church work having served Our Lord in many capacities including working for over 28 years at the Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis and once becoming the President for 8 years of The National Baptist Women’s Association Convention. Marilyn accomplished much! Heck, she was the Den Mother for scouts. She was in charge of CYO when we attended the Catholic schools! (Catholic youth organization) She served her Church, Tabernacle Missionary Baptist until she couldn’t. Her mom, Hallie Mae was very proud of her as well. Mother, as we lovingly called our grandmother was a Sunday School Teacher, Hair Stylist, Nurse and amazing Cook!!! We all learned from her. Marilyn talked about her Mom often.
Now as they both taught all of us, together, our entire family, and remembering Mike Brown (deceased) who truly loved his aunt bow to God’s Divine Will. We know He called Marilyn home with a hearty
“Servant Well done!”
