Marjorie Helen Proffitt, Indianapolis, peacefully departed to her new life September 22, 2012 at the age of 92. She was born on July 21, 1920 in Jacksonville, IL to Josephine H. and Allen C. Smith. She was raised on a farm and in 1940 she married Jesse James Proffitt Jr. They traveled the States for Jesse’s job with the railroad and settled in Mattoon, IL for 18 years. In 1965, the railroad brought them to Indianapolis.
Marjorie excelled at everything. She was an amazing mother of 8 successful children and her family was the center of her life. She ran a tight ship and instilled in her children her strong Catholic faith and values. Her exquisite gardens would tell you she had a green thumb. Marj was a fabulous cook and baker. She was an expert seamstress making many of the family clothes. She was gifted with common sense and could fix anything. If you met her, you would not forget her strong will and tight grip. She was an artist and her creativity came out in everything she attempted. Marj greatly enjoyed bowling with her best friends on the Cathedral Mothers Bowling league. As a parishioner, she volunteered at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, St. Augustine Guild and Little Sisters of the Poor for many years.
Her laugh and fun spirit will greatly be missed. When you look to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, you will see that the apple did not fall far from the tree. Family words to describe her are selfless, giving, love, strong, beautiful, happy, courageous, one of a kind, classic, home, ecstatic, and vivacious.
We want to thank the Little Sisters of the Poor, her doctors, the entire staff and especially the 2 East employees of St. Augustine’s Home for the devoted care given to both of our parents.
Marjorie is survived by sons Daniel P., Jesse James III (Amy), David A. (Genevieve), Richard M. and Thomas A. (Annie) Proffitt; daughters Joey Proffitt Harris (Randy), Sr. Veronica Susan LSP ( Susan J.) and Patricia A. Proffitt (Tom Foster); 15 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; sister Edith P.
