

Velvet "Grandma Vel" Hayes was born on October 8, 1924 to Arthur and Sally Scarsbrook in Atlanta, Georgia. She moved to Indianapolis, Indiana at a young age where she later graduated from Crispus Attucks High School.
"Grandma Vel" accepted Christ as her Saviour when she was in her early 20's at New Liberty Baptist Church. She received her cosmetology license at Poro Beauty School in 1956, where she specialized in hair for 15 years thereafter. She worked at RCA for 15 years, where she later departed on disability retirement in 1982.
"Grandma Vel" had a passion for gardening and her creative skill sets as a gardner will continue to be admired in the display of flowers and vegetables that surround her house. She took pride in her garden and pleasure in passing down her gardening skills to many in the fruits of her labor.
"Grandma Vel" was truly loved by many and made friends everywhere she went and was well known in the Haughville community. She will be remembered as a dedicated mother and grandmother who worked two jobs to provide for her family. She loved her family dearly and they loved her.
"Grandma Vel" was proceeded in death by her parents Arthur and Sally Scarsbrook and sister Vera Harrison. She leaves to cherish in her memories two sisters: Jean McCallister and Hattie Bartlett; four children: Jimmie Lee Davis (Richard), Richard C. Hayes Jr. (Linda), Gregory Hayes (Dorothy) and Valarie Burton; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and loving family and friends.
