Phyllis Kathleen Markey Barrett, age 94, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on Thursday, December 23, 2021. Phyllis was born September 6, 1927 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Margaret (Dobson) Clements and Phil Clements. She is also preceded in death by her husbands, James Markey and William Barrett; granddaughter, Shannon Branson; and step-daughter, Debbie Barrett. She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and her faith was always important to her and at the center of her life and actions. In her younger years while working, the American Business Women's Association. She and her husband, James, ran the first Dairy Queen in the city at 21st and Capital for many years. She and her husband, Bill, enjoyed traveling together taking many memorable trips. Phyllis always kept a garden and enjoyed working in the yard to keep it meticulous. She was famous for her red geraniums. Phyllis loved her friends and family especially when they could all gather and celebrate. The Hathaway gang from the old neighborhood managed to keep together and gather regularly including this year which was a highlight for all. She never knew a stranger and was always the life of the party. The casino would give her a second wind and she'd move like she was young again even with the walker to "beat" you to her favorite machine. Phyllis was also an NBA and football fan and got Colts season tickets their first year and kept them up for 15 years. Most importantly she loved her large family and spending time with the grand and great grandkids always being sure to get her hug at the end of the visit.
Phyllis is survived by her children, Phil Markey, Paul Markey (Jackie), and Ann Branson (Jim); her step-children, Diana Hay, William Barrett Jr. (Carol), Denise Tobin (Mike), and Dennis Barrett (Beth); 17 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be Thursday, December 30, 2021 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Feeney-Hornak Shadeland Mortuary, 1307 N Shadeland Ave, Indianapolis, Indiana 46219. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, December 31, 2021 at 10:00 AM at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 7243 E 10th St, Indianapolis, Indiana 46219 with burial to follow at Washington Park East Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana.
