

He was a devoted husband to his wife of 57 years, Carol Dalton Metzger, and together they built a life filled with love and laughter. He was a devoted father of Shana Metzger, Alexander Metzger, and Amanda “Mandi” Metzger Petree (Jordan Petree). He was a proud guardian of his nephew, Leo James Dalton III. He was a beloved “Papa” to three grandchildren, who brought him endless joy. He is survived by his brother, Robert Metzger (Sandy Metzger) along with many loving nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Manual High School in 1966.
He was a proud Army Veteran and served during the Vietnam war as a Staff Sergeant with honor and courage. During his time in the service, he was awarded a Bronze Star for his bravery.
He was retired from Allison Transmission after 42 years of dedicated service.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Nellie Metzger and his siblings, Ralph “Sonny” Metzger, James “Jimmy” Metzger, and Barbara Eastes.
Though quiet by nature, he was known for his quick wit and having the best jokes. He was always finding ways to bring a smile to those around him. He had a steady presence, showing up for family, friends, and anyone who needed him. His love was felt not through his words alone, but through his actions, reliability, and unwavering support.
He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, uncle, and papa whose gentle humor and steadfast heart left a mark on all those who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Rick’s memory to IU Health’s Transplant Team or Honor flight Indy.

A service to celebrate his life will be held on November 2nd at Crown Hill Funeral Home (Celebration Hall) at 11 AM with a reception to follow within the same room. He will be laid to rest privately at Crown Hill National Cemetery.
