

Mr. Robert Eugene Mehl Sr., of Indianapolis, Indiana, born on April 14, 1925 in Glendale, California, to the late Marie Violet Mehl and the late William Chris Mehl, passed away at age 93 on April 23, 2018.
As a youth, Robert became an Eagle scout in the Boy Scouts of America. He attended Arsenal Technical High School and was named to the 1943 Indiana All-star Basketball Team. After high school, Robert served in the Navy in pre-flight officer training school during World War II.
After the war, he was recruited to Indiana University and played on the IU basketball team under Branch McCracken. He finished his career at Butler University, graduating in 1949.
Over the next forty years he served as a basketball coach, teacher and counselor in the Indianapolis Public School system. His was head coach at Arlington High School 1961-1967. He retired in 1990.
Robert was the beloved husband of Edythe M. Mehl for 68 years. He was preceded in death by his brother, William Mehl; and sister, Alice Meyer. Robert is survived by his daughter Ann Marie Alley and son Dr. Robert E Mehl Jr; grandchildren, Jacob Rauscher, Max Alley, Robert Mehl III, Christopher Mehl, Walker Mehl, Lillie Mehl; and great-grandchildren, Noah Rauscher, Nicholas Mehl and Sasha Mehl. He enjoyed golf, woodworking, watching the Pacers and was a lifelong member of Meridian Methodist Church.
Friends and family members may attend the Celebration of Life on Friday, May 4 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Woodstock Country Club, 1301 west 38th St, Indianapolis.
