Ronald Carlomon Saunders, Jr., 72, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, October 21, 2025. Born and raised in Indianapolis, Ronald was a proud graduate of Crispus Attucks High School, Class of 1970, where he was a dedicated member of the wrestling team and JROTC.
He went on to earn an Associate’s Degree in Architectural Drafting from Purdue University in 1972. Early in his career, Ronald served his community as an ambulance technician for St. Vincent Hospital before joining the Indianapolis Fire Department on January 19, 1979. He devoted over 26 years to the department, most notably serving as Chauffeur of Engine 22 on A shift until his retirement on March 4, 2005.
Ronald had a deep love for gardening and woodworking, often spending hours tending to his plants or crafting with his hands. His home was filled with music—he loved to sing, whether around the house or as a joyful member of his church choir.
He was known for always having something to say to anyone about anything—never shy to share a story, a joke, or a bit of wisdom. Ronald lived life with a full heart and a joyful spirit, always trying to get the most out of every day. He loved to laugh, have fun, and bring people together with his warmth and humor.
He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 47 years, Bettie; his son, Ronald III (Brianna); his daughter, Ashley; and his cherished granddaughters, Layla and Eleanora. He also leaves behind his sisters, Patricia and Bernice, along with a host of family and friends across the country. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ronald Sr. and Birdie, and his sisters, Ronella O’Connor and Wanda.
Ronald’s legacy of service, kindness, and joy will live on in the hearts of all who truly knew and loved him.
