

Sammie Lee Carter, Sr. was born one of eleven children in Webb, Mississippi on September 15, 1939 to the late Benjamin and Pearline Carter. He confessed a hope in Christ at an early age. He was united in Holy Matrimony to Katharine Jenkins for 57 years. In this union they had two children, Sammie Carter Jr, and Vida Carter Hillier.
In 1980, he joined Antioch Missionary Baptist Church of Indianapolis, IN. He remained a faithful member and usher until he moved back to Lakeview, Arkansas for his retirement.
His began his career at Eli Lilly and Company in 1971 where he held a variety of jobs until his retirement in 1994. During this same time, he also became an entrepreneur and started a commercial cleaning company called Sam's Building Service. He was able to bless many people with employment throughout the 20 years he was in business and took pride in his work to provide quality service.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who will be missed dearly. He never met a stranger. If you needed help, he was always there to lend a hand. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed traveling with family and friends to find the perfect spot to hunt or fish.
He transitioned from this life of labor to reward in Christ at the age of 81, on December 21, 2020 at 5:18pm at St. Vincent hospital in Indianapolis, IN. He is now joined with his parents, four brothers and two sisters who preceded him in death:
Dave Carter, June Carter, Willie Carter, Henry Carter, Louisa Childs and Classie Campbell.
Sammie leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife Katharine Jenkins Carter, son Sammie (Cindy) Carter, Jr., of Fishers, IN daughters Vida (Joseph) Hillier of McCordsville, IN; Shirley Mitchell of Chicago, IL. Also, six grandchildren Sammie Carter III, Sabrina Carter, Noah Carter of Fishers, IN; Detcie (Mark) Mitchell Walker, Shaunta (Kofi) Toliver, Dennis Campbell of Chicago, IL. Four great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, four sisters Louise Ewing of Cleveland, OH, Verline (Clarence) Turner of Indianapolis, IN. Alberta (Oscar) Crenshaw of Gary, IN, Linda Carter of Little Rock, AR; and one brother Johnnie Carter. Sisters in-law: Alice Besler, Hattie Mae Carter, and Delinda Carter. A host of treasured nephews, nieces, cousins, and dear friends.
