He was born at home in Indianapolis, IN, on September 27, 1941. At an early age, he accepted Christ. He attended grade school at George Washington Carver School #87 and graduated as Class President from Crispus Attucks High School in 1960.
He lived in Georgia and Maryland for several years before returning to Indianapolis to serve as a wonderful grandfather to his first grandchild.
His last job in Indianapolis was as a Lieutenant in the Indianapolis Fire Department, where he worked for over twenty years before retiring in 1986. When he wasn’t saving lives and putting out fires, he drove trucks for Sodrel Truck Lines.
Dad was a beloved jokester, always ready to lighten the mood and bring a smile to our faces. He found pleasure in spoiling us, whether it was standing in a frigid-cold, long line in another state so we could be the first of our friends to have one of the first video games, the Atari 5200, or finding DeLynn’s dream car, a 65 Mustang.
He had a great voice but never knew the words of songs. He was a fantastic cook, known for his chili, spaghetti and baseballs (these weren’t typical meatballs, more of the size of a baseball!) and his one-potter of a green bean recipe he concocted. He always cooked entirely too much (like he was still cooking at the fire station) and called us over. His call went like this, “Hey baby, it’s Daddy. I cooked dinner; stop by and get some. Ok, talk to you later, love you, bye-bye.”
He was a sports enthusiast! He had every sports channel his cable company offered, and I don’t care what time of the day or night; his TV blasted some sort of sports program. When we were kids, he would tell us to let him check the baseball game score, “Give me just a minute,” during a car ride. The “minute” never ended, and we had to listen to a baseball game on an AM station.
What a tremendous loss we feel; we would move mountains to hear him again, although he often worked our last nerve! But he would not want us to feel sad and hated seeing us cry. So, we are here to commemorate his life positively, celebrating the joy and love he brought into our lives.
His love for his family was unwavering, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
He leaves behind his children, DeLynn McKinney, Jimmy McKinney (Faith), and Shellie McKinney. His grandchildren are Jeremy McClendon and Mauricia McKinney, as well as three great-grandchildren. He also leaves his sister, Ruth Jean Goodrich, brother, Lester McKinney, and youngest sister, Phyllis Seymour, a host of nieces and nephews, and his longtime companion, Shirley Jones.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Zillah Mae McKinney, and his first-born daughter, Denise Rochelle McKinney.
