Sue Ann Popke McKinsey, a 26 year Pharmacy Supervisor at Eskenazi Hospital, passed away at the age of 65 on December 23, 2019 at 9:29pm in her home surrounded by family and friends in Indianapolis, Indiana after a two year battle with ovarian cancer. Her memorial service will be held this Saturday, January 4, 2020 at 1pm, at Rise Church, 6001 W 52nd St, Indianapolis, IN 46254.
Sue was born on December 1, 1954 in Goshen, Indiana to the late Opal (Smeltzer) and Harold Charles Popke, Sr. She grew up on a farm in Dunlap and was a surprise to her parents, the youngest of three additional siblings; Chuck Popke, Hettie Popke Lehman, and Nedra Popke Stone. She was the salutatorian of her graduating class at Concord High School in Dunlap; however, the valedictorian said she should've been in her spot since Sue took harder classes. Sue went on to graduate with a Doctorate of Pharmacy degree from Purdue University in 1980 with a GPA of 5.87/6.0.
After moving to Indianapolis for work, she found a home in a local church family and reconciled herself with God. She was baptized on September 3, 1982. There she met her eventual husband, Mike McKinsey, and they were married on March 24th, 1990. They gave birth to their first son, Mark, in 1993. She started working at Eskenazi Hospital (formerly Wishard Hospital) at that time after working at IU Hospital and starting her own business jointly with her husband. In 2000, Sue and her husband adopted their second son, Matthew, from Romania.
Sue was known to have a tough exterior, but a deeply compassionate, non-judgmental soul. She was intelligent, resilient, confident, sincere, and driven in everything she pursued. She enjoyed participating in church events, especially singing in choir. Sue loved helping others, and had a unique sense of humor with those she was comfortable around. She had a passion for music, singing and playing the cello for many years throughout her schooling and after. In college, Sue learned and became fluent in sign language and used it to interpret for the deaf. She was a dedicated, supportive, and loving mother.
She is survived by her faithful husband, Michael McKinsey, and beloved sons, Mark McKinsey and Matt (Bethany) McKinsey; her loving sister, Hettie (Tom) Lehman, and brother, Chuck (Shirley) Popke; her sisters-in-law Mary (Bob) Whitcomb and Paula Riley; her brother-in-law Dale Stone; her nieces Heidi Watson, Holly (John) Rebish, Paige Whitman, and Kim (Donnie) Storms; her nephews Todd (Stephanie) Lehman and Scott (Gina) Stone; and her many dear friends.
Instead of sending flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance, in Sue's name.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 4, 2020, at 1pm at Rise Church, 6001 W 52nd St, Indianapolis, IN 46254.
