

William Robert Buckner, 87, of Indianapolis, passed away on January 6, 2021 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
William Robert Buckner was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to Reverend John L. Buckner & Hallie Buckner (Brooks) on February 7, 1933. William attended Indianapolis Public Schools. He married Phyllis Jean Bowles on March 15, 1952 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He worked for many years as a city truck driver and dock worker for Roadway Express until retiring October 31, 1995. He later worked for Alig & Associates as a parking attendant. He was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the Army as a Sergeant of a tank battalion. William was a member of The Odyssey club until it’s closing; and was an active member of the American Legion post 249 until his passing.
William affectionately known as “Buck” has left everyone that came in contact with him a memory of a BIG infectious smile, his quick wit and overall infectious jovial personality. He imparted a lot of wisdom to friends (young and old) as well as family, which allowed everyone to look at their circumstance with a much broader scope; this was reaffirmed by all of his journaling and anecdotal sayings he has placed in what is now affectionately called Buckner’s Lounge (The Garage/Man Cave) also where he loved to entertain with music and dancing.
William R. Buckner is preceded in death by Phyllis Buckner (wife), Hallie Buckner (mother), John Buckner (father), Benjamin Bennett (brother), Roosevelt Buckner (brother), and Lillie Dale Buckner- Bey (sister).
William R. Buckner is survived by his children Vincent Buckner, Vanessa Peterson (James Peterson), Victoria Scott. His sister, Rilda Buckner Hughes Grayson - His grandchildren Vincent Buckner Jr., Gina Cabell, James Peterson Jr. (Wankaego Peterson), Ashley Johnson, Whitney Peterson, Cesalie Black, and Nathaniel Black. His great grandchildren, Tierra Cabell, Tyler Cabell, JaShawnn Bates, Marshawnn Henderson, Jaiden Peterson, Jayla Peterson, Liam Peterson, Bryce Golden, James Peterson III, Jett Thompkins. He also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews along with friends that had become family by love not blood.
Visitation will be 10:00am - 12:00pm Tuesday January 19, 2021 at Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery.
Funeral services will be held 12:00pm Tuesday January 19, 2021 at Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery with Chaplin Rob Mifflin officiating. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are by Crown Hill Funeral Home.
