Mr. Murry Mitchell, 89, passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at St. Catherine’s Village in Madison. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at Lakewood Funeral Home with visitation to follow.
Murry was born to Lonnie and Vera Mitchell August 4, 1925 in Webster County, Mississippi. He graduated from Eupora High School at age 16 and moved to Columbus to work with his older brothers at C & G Railroad. After a brief time in the Army, he returned to the Columbus area, attended Mississippi State University and graduated in 1948 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. While in Columbus he met and in 1949 married Pauline St. John. They lived in Jackson where Murry worked for IBM. During this time he attended Jackson School of Law at night and earned his law degree as well as passing the Mississippi Bar. He had a gift with people and was successful in sales with IBM. However, wanting to live and raise his family in Mississippi, he left after eight years to pursue other career paths including banking, farming and ownership of Western Auto stores for over 30 years.
An active member of Alta Woods Baptist church, he served as deacon, on various committees and taught men’s Sunday school classes. We have been told by many how much they enjoyed and learned from his classes.
Murry was a man of great faith, tender in heart and humorous. He loved his family including his wife of over 65 years and daughters Paula and Celia. Known as Papa to his 6 grandsons he spent countless hours caring for them and sharing his love for the country in Webster County, teaching them to fish, hunt and entertaining them with stories of growing up on a farm. He modeled a man of faith and honor and was a blessing to his family.
Murry leaves behind his wife Pauline, daughters Celia Baccus and Paula Corner (Roger), grandsons Shelby, Brandon (Jennifer) and Peyton Bredemeier, Dylan Baccus, Mitchell and Austin Johnson as well as 4 great grandchildren, Ian, Connor, Baylee, and Emilie Bredemeier. He also leaves his sister Frances Pollard (Bob) and many nieces and nephews.
The family expresses deep gratitude to the staff of St. Catherine’s Village Siena and Campbell’s Cove for their loving care of daddy and support to his family for the past two years.
Memorials may be sent to Alta Woods Baptist Church, 168 Colonial Drive, Jackson, MS 39204 or St. Dominic Health Services Foundation, 969 Lakeland Drive, Jackson, MS 39216.
