On Easter Sunday, April 20, 1924 in Lumberton, MS, Robert & Inez Dyar Thompson was blessed with their first child, Hilda Jean. Mrs. Jean “Mimi” Greene, age 90, passed away on Friday, August 29, 2014 at The Orchard. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at 11:30 am at Lakewood Funeral Home with visitation from 10:00 am until service time. Interment will follow the service at Lakewood Memorial Park.
Jean attended school in Jackson and Canton before moving to Mobile, AL her senior year. There she met and married, Duff Greene, the father of her two children, Gaye and Rick.
Always a straight ‘A’ student, she had no problem getting a job. She worked for Smart Shoe Store in Canton, opened and ran the first Green Stamp Store in Jackson owned by McCarty-Holman, owned and operated a Texaco Service Station on North West Street close to Memorial Stadium. Moving to Meridian, MS, in the late 1950’s, she was fortunate to go to work for the Meridian and Bigbee Railroad as an accountant, retiring in the late 80’s. One of the highlights of her career was when the executives from Georgia-Pacific noted her immaculate penmanship and the accuracy of her handwritten ledgers. After retiring, she moved back to Jackson to be close to her parents and children. This is where she had her favorite “job” as a volunteer for many years at the Baptist Hospital, where she worked in the gift shop. Mimi loved her job and in return was loved by everyone at Baptist. She served as president and had some of the best jewelry sales the volunteers sponsored. Mimi loved her church, Colonial Heights Baptist in Ridgeland, MS. She was a former member of Center Terrace Baptist in Canton, Highland Baptist in Meridian and Broadmoor Baptist in Madison.
Preceded in death by her parents, Bob & Inez, her brother, Bobby who was killed at age five and her first grandchild, Mark Stancel.
Mimi is survived by her two children, two grandsons and a great-granddaughter. We will all miss our sweet Mimi so much, but we have wonderful memories.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at The Orchard for being so kind to her & the family, especially Vickie, Gaylor, Phyliss and many more.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of her grandson, Mark Stancel, to the Northwestern Brain Tumor Institute, 1201 Davis Street, Evanston, Illinois 60208 or at www.give-northwestern.org.
