

John Russell Broome, 71, passed from this life to the next chapter of reunion with Christ and his beloved Cynthia on Monday, May 11. Visitation will be from 1-2pm on Thursday, May 14 at the sanctuary of First Baptist Church in Clinton, MS. The funeral will be a 2pm at FBC Clinton with graveside following at Lakewood Memorial Park in Jackson.
Russell was born on June 11, 1954 in Jackson, MS to Bayard Lamar Broome and Susie Lucille Malone Broome. He graduated as valedictorian from Clinton High School in 1972. Graduating from Mississippi College in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, he spent most of his career working in Information Technology at AT&T/Bellsouth.
Russell married Cynthia Ory on May 2, 1981 and together they had 3 children – Adam Russell born October 1983 passed December 1983, John Michael born June 1985, and Phillip Edmond born July 1988. He enjoyed traveling with his family, taking cross-country road trips during the boys’ summer breaks. After Cynthia passed, he continued to travel with the senior adult ministry at FBC Clinton to retreats and revivals.
Russell attended FBC Clinton since childhood, volunteering in the children’s preschool ministry and serving as director for the Royal Ambassador boys mission program. He was a member of the Adult Choir, Joymakers Choir, and served as a deacon for many years. In addition to serving in the church, he was a member of the Clinton chapter of Lions Club International, where he was secretary and won the Melvin Jones Fellowship award for his significant contribution to the Lions’ mission of humanitarian service. He also enjoyed volunteering at the Clinton Community Nature Center.
Besides his parents, Russell was preceded in death by his son Adam, and his wife Cynthia. He is survived by his sons Michael Broome of Madison, and Phillip Broome of Clinton, brothers Edward and Richard Broome of Clinton and sister Mary Sue Hutton of Clinton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in his memory to the Velma Jackson High School Falcon Club for benefit of the Powerlifting team, which his son Michael helps coach.
