Mary Lackey

Mary Tumasz Lackey, aged 78, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026, surrounded by her family. Born on September 22, 1947, Mary was the daughter of Eddie and Bobbie Tumasz. She was raised in Jackson, MS and graduated from Murrah High School. Mary then attended the University of Mississippi. In 1967, she married her high school sweetheart, Carl Lackey. Later, their son, Mark, was born in Oxford, Mississippi. After Carl graduated from the University of Mississippi, they moved to Charlottesville, VA, for Carl to begin his MBA at the University of Virginia. After completion of the program, the family moved first to Chicago and later to Columbus, Ohio, as Carl pursued his career in investment banking. In 1978, the family returned to Jackson as Carl took over the family business, Capital Furniture Company. Mary worked side by side with Carl at the store. During this period, Mary developed a passion for the sport of tennis. She was an excellent player and formed many lifelong friendships through tennis. Another passion of Mary’s was travel. Mary loved traveling overseas and exploring the world. She also enjoyed traveling to watch tennis. She attended all the majors and events in China, Australia, Spain and Monaco. She also enjoyed participating in her various clubs and the friendships she made.

Mary was a devoted wife to Carl, a loving mother to Mark, and an adoring grandmother to Sean. She also adored her silky terrier, Rusty, who is missing her very much right now.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Bobbie Tumasz, her sister Jan Foregger and brother Johnny Tumasz. She is survived by her husband Carl Lackey, her son Mark Lackey, and his wife Andrea. She is also survived by her grandson, Sean Lackey.

A celebration of life will be held at Carl and Mary’s home on January 24, 2026 from 3:00 – 5:00. All friends and family are invited to come by and share their memories. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Webster Animal Shelter of Madison or to the charity of your choice.
