
Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home on High Street at 3:00pm Tuesday August 2, 2011 with interment in Beth Israel Cemetery immediately following. Rabbi Valerie Cohen officiating. The family will receive visitors from 1:00pm to 3:00pm on Tuesday. Maxine was born in Jackson on August 14, 1930 to Sam and Florence Stotland Millstein. She grew up in Belhaven, attended Jackson public schools and graduated from Central High School in 1948. She spent the next two years at the University of Alabama where she was twice selected a "Corolla Beauty" and appeared in the yearbooks.Maxine married Joseph S.Harris of New Orleans on October 29, 1950 and that union continued for over 60 years until her death. She was loving and caring wife and mother to her husband and four children and they will miss her.
She was a Den Mother for a group of unruly Cub Scouts, participated in Children's Theatre both as a featured actress and behind the stage doing makeup and costumes. She looked forward to her Tuesday bridge game and to her monthly Central High "48'ers" luncheons. She particularly enjoyed her participation in the MMIC Investment Club activities ,which club she helped found.
After her children got older she worked two days a week at Maison Weiss in Highland Village where her paycheck never came close to covering her monthly purchases. She was a member of Beth Israel Sisterhood and a Life Member of Hadassah.
Maxine and her husband traveled all over the world,from Israel to Japan and beyond, much of it attending International Conventions of Rotary . She was named a Paul Harris Fellow and a Benefactor of The Rotary Foundation.
She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Sam Millstein Jr. She is survived by her husband and four children: Anne Dee Harris Tucker of Maplewood, NJ, Dr. Jack Harris II (Laura) of Indianapolis, Maury S. Harris (Kiri) of Abingdon, PA and A. Randall Harris(Rhonda) of Madison.Sisters, Perrye M.Lewis of Mobile and Tanya M. Palmer of St. Louis. Maxine is also survived by seven grandchildren: Jason and Zachary Tucker of Maplewood, NJ, Hannah Harris of Monroe, LA, Joseph Andrew and Matthew Harris of Madison, and Eli and Sylvie Harris of Abingdon, PA. She is also survived by 3 step-grandchildren: Amy and Brooke Greenspan of Indianapolis and Alex Grubenman of Madison.
