Mrs. Miller was born in Macon Mississippi on January 29, 1935, to Chester and Rev. William E. Hardy, Sr., the third of their three children. After graduating from Washington High School, she received her Associate of Arts Degree from Copiah-Lincoln Community College where she was distinguished as an inaugural member of the Hall of Fame. Her time at Co-Lin began her adult life’s pursuit of excellence in music. She was blessed by mentors who saw her potential to utilize music to enrich lives through education, performance, and ministry. She attended Belhaven University and completed her Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance with a Minor in Education.
Mrs. Quay Miller spent 32 years of her life with the public school systems of Mississippi, the final 23 years of her teaching career being with the Jackson Public Schools at Forest Hill High School.
Quay unselfishly shared her gifts and gave to others as Mama Quay — mentor, confidant, advisor and friend. She held herself and others to the highest standards of excellence.
Quay always considered the “Gift of Music” to be one of God’s very special gifts. She instilled a love for music in her students which led many to pursue careers in music, ministry and education. Quay Miller was also devoted to music in the church. She served The Lord as Choir Director and Worship Leader at Forest Hill United Methodist Church for over 40 years. She always asked The Lord for guidance.
Mrs. Miller was predeceased by her husband, W. N. Miller, Jr., parents, brother, Rev. William E. Hardy, Jr., and sister, Cherite Farmer Fleming. She is survived by her two daughters, Margaret Miller Carmichael (J. Kris) of Terry MS, and Jane Miller of Ferndale, MI.
