Sadie is pre deceased by her husband of 49 years, Paul “Dickie” Purvis and son, Paul E. Purvis, her brothers, Claude Soigner, Ray Soignier and Chester Soignier.
Sadie was the oldest of five children born to Simon and Alice Soignier and lived in Carencro, Louisiana as well as Orange Texas where Simon worked for Bancroft Paper Company. Eventually the family moved north to West Monroe to follow employment opportunities with Brown Paper Mill. At the age of 14, Sadie began working full time at Bancroft Bag Factory in West Monroe.
Meeting her future husband on a blind date arranged by Sadie’s Aunt, Elodie Hayes, had arranged, the couple courted on foot to and from dinner and movie dates for about a year. On June 15, 1940, Sadie married her love, Paul A. “Dickey” Purvis from West Monroe, where they lived until 1955 then moved to Jackson, MS. Sadie and Dickie were the proud parents of five children, Paul “Elton”, Eugene, Lynnette, Sharon, and Connie. They became Charter Members of the then newly formed St. Therese Catholic Church in 1956. Sadie, a skilled seamstress, worked as an alterationist at Crescent Laundry for several years before taking a job in the St. Therese School cafeteria when Connie entered kindergarden in 1966 and worked there until approximately 1979. Sadie loved being around the school children and so continued to work as a regular volunteer at the cafeteria until her early 80’s. Although she wasn’t a fan of cooking, she did a lot of it in her life and was an excellent cook. Sadie’s cinnamon rolls were legendary at St. Therese and are still spoken of fondly by former students today.
From 1955 TO 2008, Sadie lived on McCluer Road, Dickie’s 40 acre dream homestead. Many improvements and memories were made there, and the best friends and neighbors imaginable lived nearby. In 2008 Sadie moved from McCluer Road to Florence, MS to an apartment where she determinedly kept gardening in pots and planters outside her apartment. After two years of apartment living, Sadie decided an apartment wasn’t for her and purchased a home in Florence where she continued to live until her death. Sadie began attending St. Judes Catholic Church in Pearl in 2013 but still visited and kept up with dear friends from St. Therese.
