William David Morgan, Jr., known affectionately as David, was born on May 8, 1940, in Jackson, Mississippi, to William David Morgan, Sr. and Letha Tindall Morgan. He grew up in Jackson and graduated from Murrah High School, where his exceptional musical talent was already evident.
An accomplished and gifted musician, he won the Mississippi State Piano Concerto Contest and performed as a guest soloist with the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra—an early achievement that reflected his extraordinary artistry. David went on to attend Southern Methodist University, earning a degree in piano and further honing the skills that would define his life’s work. David later lived in New York City, where he built a distinguished career as a musician and teacher. He was a respected voice teacher whose students went on to perform with City Opera and the Metropolitan Opera. He also served as organist for The City Church of New York, contributing his talents to worship and community life through music.
After retiring, David made his home in Dallas, Texas, where he was surrounded by numerous friends and remained musically active, serving as organist for various churches. In his later years, he returned to Jackson, Mississippi, to be near family. His love for music, dedication to teaching, and generous spirit will leave a lasting impact on all who knew him.
David is survived by his sister, Mary Morgan Wallace; his brother, Ed Morgan and wife Karen; and his beloved nieces and nephews and their children, who will cherish his memory and his remarkable legacy.
The family suggests that memorial donations be made if desired to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra or the music charity of your choice.
