He was born in Edinburgh, Ms. In 1928 to Arthur and Anna Pearl Barham Mayo. After the passing of their mother, Jim, sister Johnny, and brothers, George and Harold were raised by their Dad and other family members.
When he finished high school, Jim opted to marry Jesse Audrey Creekmore (Tommie) and joined the Air Force, which began his first career. In his 22 years in the USAF he rose to the highest enlisted rate of Chief Master Sergeant.
Jim moved his family, from Keesler AFB to Clinton in 1968. He retired on a Friday and began his second career at Deposit Guaranty Bank the next Monday. He held multiple positions in management before retiring. They attended Morrison Heights Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday School. Approximately 50 years ago he and Tommie moved their letter to the First Baptist Church of Jackson.
He had two diversions in life, spreading the name of Christ and “farming." The Great Commission was Jim’s marching orders from God. He would approach virtually everyone that he crossed paths with and ask about their relationship with Jesus. God used him in a mighty way.
Through his 60s and 70s, Jim had an acre sized “farm” and shared his produce with so many people. Willie Jim Mayo is survived by his son, Steven Douglas Mayo, daughter, Martha Mayo Grayson, four grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Services will be held on Friday, April 17th at the First Baptist Church of Jackson. Viewing will begin at 10 followed by the funeral service from 11 to 12. The graveside portion will be at Lakewood Cemetery beginning at 2 pm.
