First Sergeant John Lewis Sullender

John was born on May 13, 1966 in Jackson, TN, the son of the late Robert and Mary Anderson Sullender.

John proudly served his country in the Tennessee Army National Guard for 30 years, and 20 years as a military technician. John dedicated his life to protecting the freedoms we cherish today. 1SG John Sullender served two tours in Iraq, one tour in Jordan, and one in Kuwait. Throughout his military career, he demonstrated unwavering commitment, integrity, and courage. Beyond his distinguished military career, John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, uncle, and friend. On top of being the "Fixer of All Things", he was also known for his strong, dominating, yet gentle at heart, acting without hesitation, humor, and witty comebacks that touched the lives of many. To his family and his soliders he was a guiding force, a mentor, full of wisdom, and steady presence who led by example and showed the true meaning of loyalty and sacrifice.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Matthew Butler and his brother Stan Mills.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Teresa Lay Sullender; children, Sarah Butler Newsom, Adam Shead (Trina), and Joshua Butler; his grandchildren, Alex Elder, Austin Elder, Daniel Butler, Jackson Butler, AJ Shead, Emalyn Newsom, Aaliyah Shead and Olivia Newsom; his brother Steve Mills; his sisters, Linda Huang (Ray), Mary Sue Frazier (Glenn), Patti Davis (late Michael), Robin Reid (Lloyd); and many nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate the life of First Sergeant John Sullender will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2026 at 11 a.m. at the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons with Chaplain Terry Bell officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 am, one and half hour prior to the service. A committal with military honors will be held following the service at 1:30 pm at the Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery at Parker’s Crossroads.
