James was born in Scotts Hill, TN on January 23, 1937 to Carl and Velma Maness Scott. James was a lifelong sports fan and athlete. After competing and graduating from Jackson High School, he received a basketball scholarship to Union University. James also played second base for his alma mater's baseball team. Upon his graduation from Union, James signed a professional baseball contract with the Cleveland Indians. He went on to earn a master's degree from the University of Mississippi before teaching and coaching in the Jackson community. He made a lasting impact not only on the youth he coached by on all the lives he touched as well.
Over his lifetime, James devoted years to youth sports, civic, and community causes. He found joy in attending as well as serving at his church, First United Methodist Church in Jackson. He was a leader in the Jackson business community through a long and successful insurance and banking career. James retired 20 years ago after serving as the first president of The Bank of Jackson.
Much loved for his giving spirit, sense of humor, and integrity, Scotty's greatest pleasure was enjoying time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Patricia Clark Scott; son, John C. Scott (Phyllis) of Austin, TX, daughter Susan Scott Robbins (Ned) of Olive Branch, MS; and a large extended family. They have been blessed with four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
