

Services for Peggy Joyce Sowell, age 83 of Oakfield, TN, will be held on Friday, April 15, 2016 at 2 p.m. at the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons with Steve Osborne officiating. Burial will follow in Oakfield Cemetery.
Mrs. Sowell passed away at Jackson Madison County General Hospital on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 after a short illness.
Mrs. Sowell was born on November 18, 1932 in Crockett County, TN to the late Emerson Laman of Humboldt, TN and the late LaVada Bell Carraway of Memphis, TN.
Mrs. Sowell graduated from Humboldt High School in 1950 and worked for Ben H. Caldwell PanAm Motor Company for several years. On July 10, 1954, she married Odell Sowell of Oakfield, TN. For several years she stayed at home to raise her family. She then went to work part time for Oakfield Men’s Outlet as a salesperson and bookkeeper, while also working part time as a rural mail carrier. She went full time with the post office in Jackson, TN in 1985. She retired from the post office in February 1995 with 25 years of service.
She became a member of the former Oakfield United Methodist Church after her marriage and beginning her life in the Oakfield Community.
Mrs. Peggy enjoyed reading, cooking, gardening, and watching hummingbirds.
Mrs. Sowell was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Odell Sowell, in May 2015.
Survivors include daughter, Ann Sowell of Oakfield, TN; sons, James Sowell (Kathy) of Oakfield and Jerry Sowell of Humboldt; her grandson, Tyler Sowell (Monica) of Lexington, TN; sister, Shirley Morgan of Calhoun, GA and brother, Ron Carraway of Arlington, TN; several nieces and nephews; and step great grandchildren, Carson, Caleb, Cheyenne, and Cydney.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Don Laman; stepmother, Laverne Laman; and stepfather, Polk Carraway.
Active pallbearers to serve will be James Sowell, Jerry Sowell, Tyler Sowell, Tommy Sowell, Anthony Williams, and Bill Rowan.
Honorary pallbearers will be her brother, Ron Carraway, and brother in law, Edward Sowell.
The family would like to thank Ms. Sue Ross and Ms. Joy Parker for their wonderful care given to her these past three years.
The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, April 14, 2016 from 5-8 p.m. at George A. Smith and Sons North Chapel.
