Suzanne was born on May 28, 1945, to Charlotte and Dempsey Thornton. She grew up alongside her siblings, older brother Donald “Don” Thornton, who preceded her in death, and her younger sister, Mary, who survives her.
She was formerly married to Frank Nelson, who also preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter, Wendi Johnson, and her grandson, T.J. Johnson. Of all her roles in life, being “Mom” and “Grandmother” was her greatest joy. Her love for her daughter and grandson was deep and evident - she saved every photo she could find of them just to look at again later.
Suzanne worked many years at BancorpSouth in Jackson before her retirement. She had a generous spirit and loved giving gifts, especially handmade ones. For many years she enjoyed knitting items for those she loved. She delighted in simple pleasures — tending gardens, caring for animals, watching old John Wayne westerns, and spending time with her little dog, Tucker, who was her constant companion for the past six years. Her favorite colors were yellow and pink.
Suzanne was deeply committed to her Christian faith. She read Scripture regularly, loved the old Southern Baptist hymns, and often hummed along when one was played. She frequently spoke of the Lord’s goodness and was ready for His coming. Her faith brought her comfort in every lonely moment and strength through every struggle.
While her passing came as a shock, her family rejoices in the hope that she is now free from pain and struggle, reunited with her parents, her brother, and her Savior, the Prince of Peace. She no longer labors for energy, no longer struggles with frailty, but rests fully in the presence of the Lord she faithfully trusted.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 17, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at George A. Smith & Sons Funeral Home in Jackson, Tennessee. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m., with the service beginning at 1:30 p.m.
