

Dr. A.G. Jonas passed away peacefully on May 15th, 2023, with his family at his bedside. Garland was born on July 2, 1926, to Adolph Garland Jonas and Alexandra Link Jonas, in Lenior, North Carolina where his family was originally from. Garland moved with his family in 1932 to Neptune Beach. It was an idyllic small town where Garland and boyhood friend, Paul Wilcox, hunted and fished in Palm Valley. Garland was a volunteer Lifeguard at the beaches and later became an Eagle Scout. Garland attended Fletcher High School and transferred to Marion Military Institute in Marion, Alabama where he received his High School Diploma. In 1944, Garland entered the Navy and became a Corpsman at Bethesda Hospital. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he enrolled at the University of North Carolina where he met the love of his life, Lillian Lawing. He graduated and married Lillian on November 25, 1950, in Clarksville, Tennessee. Garland attended Vanderbilt University Medical School and graduated in June of 1956. Upon graduation he moved to New York City with his young family and became Chief Resident of Obstetrics and Gynecology at New York Hospital Cornell University. In 1961, Garland returned to Jacksonville to practice in his field of OB-GYN. In 1969, he was a Founding Member of Memorial Hospital and Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology, his career lasted for thirty years. Garland served his patients with utmost care and believed that patients were always his priority.
Garland loved his boat, aptly named, the Lilly, and enjoyed deep sea fishing with his steady mate, Alfred, his son. He also took his boat with his “Gator Friends” to the Florida-Georgia game every year and fun was had by all. He enjoyed his Mountain House in Cashiers, North Carolina and made wonderful memories with family, friends and playing golf.
He was a member of Riverside Presbyterian Church, The Ponte Vedra Inn and Club, Timuquana Country Club and the Florida Yacht Cub. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Jacksonville and received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award.
He was blessed and cherished by his wife and children and leaves a legacy of his achievements. He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian. Garland is survived by his three children, Melissa Lewis (Richard), Alfred Jonas (Heidi), and Henry Jonas, his five grandchildren, Garland Reid (Richard), Elizabeth Arnold (Michael), Lillian Cullen (Harrison), August Jonas (Grace), and John Jonas, and his seven great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Reid, Lewis Reid, Anne Reid, Garland Arnold, William Arnold, Harry Cullen and Camilla Cullen.
The family would like to thank the loving care of Dr. Satpathy, and his caregivers, Renotta Brackett Carr and Lois Spatcher.
A remembrance dinner with his cherished Supper Club friends will be held at Timuquana Country Club. A private service will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery.
