

Beatrice (Bea) Scharf passed away on October 1, 2011, two days after her 94th birthday. Daughter of Eva and Abraham Hodz, she was married to Saul Scharf (deceased, 1997) for 62 years. Mrs. Scharf had a brother, Edward Hodz and a sister, Sylvia Aptheker, (both deceased). She is survived by her two sons, Dr. Michael Scharf (Janet) and Eugene Scharf. Mrs. Scharf had seven grandchildren: Bram (Staci), Glenn (Tracy), Craig (Tammy), Alex, Suzanne, Christie Angela (Brian) and Ray Shaffer (Ashleigh). Mrs. Scharf was also blessed with 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Aaron Scharf (Blanche, deceased), sister-in-law, Ellie Hodz, and many loving nieces and nephews.
The family gives special mention to her niece Eve Aptheker, a close companion and loving caregiver to Mrs. Scharf in her later years.
Mrs. Scharf was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 29, 1917, and moved to Jacksonville in 1950. She worked as a volunteer “Pink Lady” at Baptist Hospital for many years, and worked in retail fashion for Jacobson’s department store in the Better Dresses Department. She was a long-time member of Beth Shalom Synagogue, and recently joined the Jacksonville Jewish Center.
Pallbearers for the ceremony will be her grandchildren, Bram Scharf, Glenn Scharf, Craig Scharf, Alex Scharf, Austin Rice and Ray Shaffer.
Graveside services with Rabbi Jonathan Lubliner officiating will be held at 1 p.m. on October 3, 2011 in the Beth Shalom Section (Gate 5) of Evergreen Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the River Garden Hebrew Home or the Scharf Beautification Fund at the Jacksonville Jewish Center.
