Bob was born on August 23, 1934 in St. Augustine, Florida, to Perry and Gloria (Usina) Greenleaf. He was a proud descendant of two of the oldest families in the United States: the Usinas, one of the original Minorcan families who settled in St. Augustine, and the Greenleafs of New England, both of whom arrived during the colonial era.
A Graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy in 1953, Bob had already begun a career with the Florida State Theater Company where he rapidly rose through the ranks to become assistant manager at the historic Florida Theater and head manager at the Brentwood Theater (now the north side branch of the Jacksonville Public Library).
In 1957 Bob was drafted into the U. S. Army, where he served as a chaplain’s assistant in France before being discharged and reverted to the reserves in 1959. He returned home to the theater business and was honorably discharged from the reserves in 1963.
In 1959, while managing the old St. John’s Theater he hired a beautiful cashier named Marilyn Hodges. The two quickly fell in love and were married just over a year to the day they met. Over the next six years they welcomed three children: a daughter, Vivian Bettina, who passed away shortly after birth, and sons Bobby and Barry.
As the theater business waned Bob moved into full accounting roles such credit manager and treasurer at both Furchgott’s and Ivey’s department stores, and Southeast Regional Builders. Eventually Bob, in his own words, “went into business for myself” and formed Greenleaf Accounting Services, providing bookkeeping, payroll and tax preparation to many local businesses. He would run the business for over 35 years before being persuaded by his family to retire, but still helping former clients with tax preparation Into his later years.
Bob Greenleaf was a blessing to everyone he knew - family, cherished friends, neighbors, clients and caregivers. His generosity and concern for everyone in his orbit was boundless. He truly loved to help people. With his brothers he shared a love of model railroading and together they traveled around the state setting up their models at fairs and events a visiting model train shows. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Marilyn and son Barry, visiting Europe multiple times as well as most of the United States. He relished playing poker or rummy with anyone he could talk into a game, and in his private time loved playing solitaire, watching westerns, and doing word search puzzles, completing at least one a day. He made a lasting impression and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
