

Charles Strother Stringfellow, 92, died peacefully Sunday, March 6, 2011. Mr. Stringfellow was born in Richmond, Virginia on February 13, 1919, the son of Blair Burwell and Elizabeth Hargrave Stringfellow. He attended St. Christopher School and the University of Virginia. He graduated from Renssalear Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, Class of 1947. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Social Fraternity and Tau Beta Pi Honorary Engineering Fraternity. During World War II, he served as an Aircraft Maintenance Officer in the Air Transport Command Division of the Army Air Corp., and served Stateside and in Africa and the Middle East. At the time of his discharge he had attained the Rank of Major. Following the war, he went to work with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in Wilmington, North Carolina as an Assistant Electrical Engineer. He held various positions throughout his career with the Railroad and was the Chief Mechanical Officer at the time of his retirement from CSX Corp. in 1983. He was active in the Association of American Railroads and was slated to become an Executive Director at the time of his retirement. He was an enthusiastic Machinist and was active in the local Live Steam Railroad Club. He was a member of the Florida Yacht Club. He was preceded in death by Mary his wife of 64 years. His brother, Frank, died in 1996. Charles is survived by his 2 sons, Charles S. Jr. (Nancy) of Vienna, VA., and John B. of Jacksonville Beach, FL; 3 grandchildren, Charles III, Jennifer, and Mark and a great-granddaughter, Chloe. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 4129 Oxford Ave., Jacksonville, FL, Friday, March 11, 2011 at 11:00A.M. Memorial Service will conclude at the church. Inurnment will be in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia, date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church of Jacksonville or St. Christopher’s School of Richmond, VA or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the care of Hardage-Giddens Edgewood Funeral Home, 729 South Edgewood Avenue, Jacksonville, FL.
