
Charles (Chuck) L. VanDerPoel, 83, passed away peacefully on 12/03/11. He was born in a home in Jacksonville, FL at 919 Adams Street where the Jacksonville Arena now sits. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and will be dearly missed.
Chuck leaves behind his loving wife of 63 years Dolores, whom he married in Clearwater, FL on February 21, 1948. He is survived by a son, Howard L. VanDerPoel and a daughter Dorene V. Dey (Robert), a grandson Keith L. VanDerPoel, three great-grand children and friend John Burton.
Chuck attended Andrew Jackson High School and FSU. He proudly served our country as a PFC in the Army during WWII where he was awarded a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was a 100% disabled veteran and voluntarily served in DAV Chapter 26 as a service officer helping fellow veterans get their benefits from the VA.
Chuck worked in the automotive industry for most of his life. He also taught high school for a few years. He sometimes joked about subbing as a girls PE teacher.
He was a longtime member of Glynlea Grace United Methodist Church.
Daddy and Momma traveled all over the country to DAV reunions and gatherings. They also went to Lake City’s VA Hospital monthly w/DAV Chapter 26 to visit the wounded veterans.
Visitation and interment will be held at Greenlawn Funeral Homes and Cemetery, 4300 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville. Visitation is from 6-8pm, Thursday, December 8, 2011 and memorial service is at 1 pm Friday, December 9, 2011.
