Dewey Thomas James Jr., fondly known as "Jimmy," passed away peacefully on December 12, 2024, in Plano, Texas, at the age of 96. Born on October 10, 1928, in Lakeland, Florida, Jimmy spent much of his life in Jacksonville, the city he cherished.
A lifelong lover of music, Jimmy had a deep passion for Glenn Miller and the golden age of Big Band. As a young man, he would walk downtown Jacksonville and to the Armory to immerse himself in the live performances of his favorite musicians. Over the years, he built an impressive collection of CDs and albums that kept the rhythm of his youth alive.
Jimmy dedicated 30 years of his career to driving a dental lab delivery vehicle in Jacksonville, a role he fulfilled with reliability and care. Later, he worked at Publix on Atlantic and University, where he was known for his kind demeanor and strong work ethic.
Jimmy lived a quiet and devoted life, sharing a home with his beloved mother, and he was proud to be the eldest of 12 cousins, a position he held with love and pride. Recently, he made the hard decision to relocate to Texas to stay with his special friend, Cousin Linda Sue. As the family goodwill ambassador, he welcomed the “married-in’s” and next generation with the same love and acceptance. Jimmy was a loyal customer as well, visiting Woody’s, his favorite restaurant for over five decades where his favorite friends treated him like a king. He was true to his school as well, supporting the Florida Gators through the Jacksonville Gator Club.
Jimmy will be laid to rest at Oaklawn Cemetery, 4801 San Jose Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32207.
There will be a graveside service Saturday, January 18th at 11:00 AM at Oaklawn Cemetery.
A small gathering of friends and family will follow the graveside at Hardage-Giddens Mandarin Chapel, 11801 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32223.
He will be remembered for his love of music, his dedication to his work, and the warmth he brought to those who knew him.
Rest in peace, Jimmy—you will forever be in our hearts.
