Dorothy Louise Garcia Oberdorfer, 86, of Jacksonville, passed away March 10, 2018 at Community Hospice after struggling with Alzheimer's Disease for many years. She is survived by her beloved husband, Dr. Paul W. Oberdorfer; daughters Martha (David) and Donna (Steven); son Paul (Monica); grandchildren Danielle, Matthew, Annika, Sydney, and Taylor; as well as her much-loved nephews and nieces.
Dorothy was born in New Orleans, spending part of her childhood in Bay St. Louis before returning to New Orleans where she attended Hotel Dieu School of Nursing. She was taking care of pediatric patients at Charity Hospital when she met the young medical student who would become the love of her life; they married February, 2, 1961. Dorothy served in a medical unit with the Army National Guard before joining Paul at Clark AFB in the Philippines. The couple settled in Jacksonville in 1967, where Dorothy raised their three children and helped with the medical practice until they retired. Dorothy gave her time to others through the American Cancer Society, Civitan International, and Guardian ad Litem. She touched the lives of many, attending school events and ball games for years, playing tennis and Bridge, attending Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra performances, jazz festivals, and wine tastings. Her yard was a testament to her longtime involvement as a master gardener with the Garden Club of Jacksonville, their Rose and Orchid Societies, and annual Pageant of Crosses.
Services will be on Thursday, March 15th, at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel. Burial will take place afterward at the Temple Cemetery (Evergreen) downtown Jacksonville. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Dorothy's name to Community Hospice of NE Florida, Alzheimer's research, or your favorite charity.
