Dorothy Therese (Liberatore) O’Meara, 96, of Somerville, Reading, Stoneham and Andover Massachusetts and Fort Myers and Jacksonville, Florida, died peacefully on Thursday, May 22, 2025 in Jacksonville, Florida.
Dottie or Dot, as she liked to be called, was born in Somerville, Massachusetts on January 2, 1929 to Anthony and Rose (Colosi) Liberatore.
She graduated with honors from Somerville High School and worked for many years as a trained shorthand stenographer and secretary to the president of the First National Bank of Boston.
Dot and her husband of 67 years, Joseph O’Meara, were married on September 3, 1956. Joseph passed away in Jacksonville, Florida on September 15, 2023.
Dot was the quintessential loving homemaker in the traditional sense, pausing briefly in that role to work in the main office of Bancroft Elementary School in Andover, Massachusetts while her sons attended there, obviously to keep an eye on them. She kept an immaculately clean house and maintained quite the recipe catalogue, serving up delicious complete daily family meals, after school snacks, and huge feasts on holidays. She was active in various civic organizations and served as president of the Somerville Kiwanis Club wives auxiliary (Kiwani-Annes) from 1976 – 1977, during Joseph’s tenure as president of the Somerville Kiwanis Club.
Dot and Joe retired to Fort Myers, Florida in 1995 and remained there until moving to Jacksonville, Florida in 2018.
Dot was predeceased by her husband, Joseph, sister Natalie, an unnamed brother (still born) and brother Bob, and is survived by her sister Gloria (Liberatore) Sliney, sons Dennis (Donna) O’Meara and Kevin (Barbara) O’Meara, two grandchildren, Caitlin (Grant) Greenwell and Kyle (Brooke) O’Meara, and two great grandchildren, Madison and Charlotte Greenwell.
Viewing will take place on Tuesday, May 27, 2025 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Cemetery and Funeral Home, 4801 San Jose Blvd, Jacksonville, Florida.
